Warframe is a free-to-play third-person action shooter from Digital Extremes on PC, consoles and mobile. You play a Tenno controlling powerful suits called Warframes, alone or in squads of up to four. You win a mission by completing its objective and extracting, and you progress by building gear, raising Mastery Rank and clearing the endgame.

Warframe is set across the Origin System, a sci-fi solar system you travel through on a star chart. You play as a Tenno who controls Warframes, armored suits with four unique abilities each. Movement is fast and acrobatic, and most of the game is co-op PvE. A small PvP mode called the Conclave also exists.

The game is free, and Digital Extremes says non-cosmetic gear can be earned through play. Platinum, the premium currency, can be bought or traded between players. Update 44 added Narin, an ice-themed Warframe, Citrine Prime, a Banshee rework and The Icebind, a six-player mode. Operation: Taubound, a time-limited Epoch Operation, begins on October 15, 2026. Our Warframe boosting page explains how we can help.

What is the objective of Warframe?

Warframe has no single end point. The long-term goals are to follow the main quest line, unlock every planet on the star chart, build and level new Warframes and weapons, and push your Mastery Rank higher. Later you take on harder versions of content, such as the Steel Path, and endgame modes with very high-level enemies.

A single mission has a clear goal, set by its type: kill every enemy, defend a target, rescue a hostage, steal data and so on. When the goal is done, you head to extraction to finish the mission and keep your rewards.

How do you win a mission in Warframe?

Mode Team size How you win
Exterminate Solo or up to 4 Kill the set number of enemies, then extract
Defense Solo or up to 4 Protect the objective through the required waves
Spy and Rescue Solo or up to 4 Hack the data vaults or free the hostage, then extract
Boss missions (Assassination) Solo or up to 4 Defeat the boss
The Icebind 6 players Clear random missions started from Cryobells against enemies above level 999
Conclave (PvP) Varies by mode Outscore the other players or team

Most failures come from losing the objective, such as a defense target being destroyed, or the whole squad going down. You can usually revive teammates, so sticking together matters more than speed. Unlocking The Icebind requires finishing certain quests and reaching Elite Archimedea first, so it is firmly endgame content.

How does Mastery Rank and progression work?

Instead of a ranked ladder, Warframe uses Mastery Rank. You earn mastery by leveling new Warframes, weapons and companions, and by clearing star chart nodes. Ranks run from 0 to 30, then into Legendary Ranks beyond. Each new rank requires passing a short test, and higher ranks unlock access to more gear.

Beginner tips to win more

  • Follow the main quests. They unlock key systems and explain the story in order.
  • Spend time on mods. Mods matter more than the weapon itself, so upgrade your best ones first.
  • Level new gear for mastery. Every new item raised to 30 adds to your Mastery Rank.
  • Play in public squads. Groups clear missions faster and can revive you.
  • Do the star chart junctions. They open new planets and the gear that comes with them.
  • Do not rush Platinum spending. Inventory slots are usually a better buy than gear you can earn.
  • Save hard modes for later. The Steel Path and The Icebind are built for strong, tested builds.

Warframe FAQ

Is Warframe free to play?

Yes. Warframe is free on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and mobile. You can buy Platinum, the premium currency, to speed things up or get cosmetics, but non-cosmetic gear can be earned by playing. Platinum can also be traded between players, so many people earn it by selling items they farm.

Can you play Warframe solo?

Yes. Almost every mission can be played alone, and you can set your matchmaking to solo. You can also join public squads of up to four at any time. A few modes are built around groups, such as The Icebind, which is a six-player mode, so those are easier with a team.

How long does a Warframe mission take?

Most star chart missions take a few minutes. Endless modes like Defense and Survival last as long as you choose to stay, with rewards that grow over time. Quests and endgame activities take longer. Short missions make Warframe easy to fit into small sessions, even on a lunch break or before bed.

What is Mastery Rank in Warframe?

Mastery Rank is your account level. You earn mastery by leveling new gear and clearing star chart nodes, then pass a short test to rank up. Ranks go from 0 to 30, then on into Legendary Ranks. Higher ranks unlock more gear, so it is a good long-term goal for new players.

What did Warframe Update 44 add?

Update 44, Iceblade of Narin, arrived on September 23, 2026. It added Narin, an ice-themed Warframe, Citrine Prime, a Banshee rework and new weapons. Update 44.1 on October 7 added The Icebind, a six-player endgame mode. Operation: Taubound, a limited-time Epoch Operation, starts on October 15, 2026 and will not return once it ends.

Is Warframe good for beginners in 2026?

Yes, though there is a lot to learn. Follow the main quests, ask questions in chat and focus on a few good mods rather than trying everything. Cross-play and cross-save mean you can play with friends on other systems. Expect a slow start, then a much faster pace once your core gear is set.
