You play a Division agent sent to restore order in Washington, D.C. after a pandemic has broken society. It is a cover-based shooter with RPG systems: you level up, build your character with gear sets and talents, and use skills such as turrets and drones. You can play alone or in a group of up to four.

Red Horizon brought the Cleaners faction to D.C., made the Toxic PvE Dark Zone permanent and added a new Blackout Dark Zone for PvP fans. Ubisoft has said crossplay is coming in November, and the next expansion, Echoes of Central Park, launches on November 3, 2026. Our Division 2 boosting page lists what we can help with.

What is the objective of The Division 2?

Early on, the goal is to finish the story and level your agent. The base campaign takes you to level 30, and the Warlords of New York story takes you to 40. After that, experience turns into SHD levels, which give small permanent bonuses, and the real aim becomes building a strong set of gear.

In a single session, you might clear a main mission, push through a seasonal activity, run a Summit floor or head into the Dark Zone for better loot. The big group goals are the eight-player raids and the four-player incursions.

How do you win in The Division 2?

Mode Team size How you win
Missions and strongholds Solo or up to 4 Complete the objectives and defeat the final boss
Raids (Dark Hours, Iron Horse) Up to 8 Clear every encounter and its mechanics
Incursions Up to 4 Clear the full multi-stage activity
Dark Zone Solo or with a group, with other players present Extract contaminated loot by helicopter and survive rogue players
Conflict (Skirmish) Two teams Team deathmatch where each death drains your respawn tickets
Conflict (Domination) Two teams Capture and hold the strategic points

The Dark Zone has its own rules. Contaminated loot must be lifted out by helicopter: you call it, hook your bag to the rope and defend it until it leaves. Other players can turn rogue and steal from you. Toxic Dark Zones remove PvP entirely, while the new Blackout Dark Zone keeps full PvP and switches off stat normalization.

How does progression work?

There is no ranked ladder. Progress is your level up to 40, your SHD level and SHD Watch bonuses, the seasonal pass and the quality of your gear. Seasons add their own level track and rewards on top. Conflict uses skill-based matchmaking rather than visible ranks.

Beginner tips to win more

  • Follow the main missions. They give the most experience while you level to 40.
  • Use cover all the time. Standing in the open is the fastest way to go down.
  • Pick one build goal. Focus on weapon damage, skills or toughness instead of mixing all three.
  • Try the Toxic Dark Zone first. It lets you learn extraction without other players hunting you.
  • Extract often in the Dark Zone. A small, safe extraction beats losing a full bag.
  • Bring a healer or support skill in groups. Raids and incursions punish teams with no way to recover.
  • Learn raid callouts before you join. Each boss has mechanics that wipe groups who ignore them.

The Division 2 FAQ

Is The Division 2 free to play?

No. The Division 2 is a paid game on PC, PlayStation and Xbox, and it is also included with a Ubisoft+ subscription. Expansions such as Warlords of New York, which raises the level cap to 40, are paid. Echoes of Central Park, due on November 3, 2026, also needs the base game.

What is the max level in The Division 2?

The level cap is 40. The base campaign takes you to 30, and the Warlords of New York story covers 31 to 40. After that, experience becomes SHD levels, which give points for small permanent bonuses. Players under 40 who buy Echoes of Central Park get a boost so they can start it right away.

Can you play The Division 2 solo?

Yes. The story, side missions and much of the open world are fine solo, and matchmaking can fill groups for many missions. Raids are designed for up to eight players and incursions for up to four, so those are much easier with a coordinated team. Bringing friends also helps you learn boss mechanics faster.

What is the Dark Zone?

The Dark Zone is an area where you find better loot but must extract contaminated items by helicopter. In the standard versions other players can go rogue and steal from you. As of Red Horizon, Toxic Dark Zones are permanent and PvE only, while the new Blackout Dark Zone keeps PvP with full gear stats.

How many raids are in The Division 2?

There are two raids, Operation Dark Hours and Operation Iron Horse. Both are built for up to eight players with level 40 agents and strong builds. Each boss has mechanics that punish players who ignore callouts, so most groups learn them over several attempts before getting a full clear. Our raid guide explains what to prepare before you try.

Does The Division 2 have crossplay?

Ubisoft said in its Red Horizon announcement that crossplay is coming to The Division 2 in November 2026. As of October 2026 it has not launched yet, so check Ubisoft's news for the exact date and details. Crossplay should make it easier to find groups for raids and other activities that need a full team.
