The Diablo IV boss ladder is a set of Lair Bosses you farm at max level. Regular Lair Bosses like Varshan, Grigoire and Lord Zir use a Lair Key; Greater Lair Bosses like Duriel, Andariel and the Harbinger of Hatred use a Greater Lair Key; Belial sits on top. Higher Torment tiers improve the uniques and Mythic chances you get.

What is the Diablo 4 boss ladder?

The boss ladder is Diablo IV's endgame boss farm. You fight a boss in its lair, then spend a key to open its hoard of loot. Each boss has its own pool of uniques, so you farm the boss whose pool holds the item your build needs. As of October 2026 the game runs Season 15, Hell's Legacy, which started on September 15, 2026, on top of the Lord of Hatred expansion released on April 28, 2026. Lord of Hatred merged the old summoning materials into a few shared keys.

Tier Bosses Key Group size Main rewards
Lair Bosses Grigoire, Beast in the Ice, Echo of Varshan, Lord Zir, Urivar, Bartuc, Astaroth Lair Key 1 to 4 Boss-specific uniques, a chance at Greater Lair Keys
Greater Lair Bosses Duriel, Andariel, Harbinger of Hatred, the Butcher Greater Lair Key 1 to 4 Better unique pools and Mythic chances
Top of the ladder Belial, Lord of Lies Betrayer's Husks 1 to 4 You pick another boss's pool; best Mythic odds

There is no weekly lockout. The limit is how many keys you have. Difficulty comes from your world tier: bosses scale with Torment, and Lord of Hatred extended Torment to 12 tiers. Some bosses are tied to expansions, for example the Harbinger of Hatred needs Vessel of Hatred. New to the game? Read what is Diablo 4 and how do you win first.

How do you start the boss ladder?

From a fresh seasonal character, the route to the top of the ladder looks like this:

  1. Reach level 70. The cap is 70 since Lord of Hatred. Our Diablo 4 leveling and Pit guide covers the fastest route.
  2. Unlock Torment. Clear Pit tiers to open the Torment difficulties. The exact tier needed is shown in game.
  3. Collect Lair Keys. Keys drop from endgame activities, and War Plans can generate an activity key if you are short. Check the key's tooltip for its current sources.
  4. Travel to a lair. Open the map and travel straight to the boss's dungeon, such as Harbinger's Den in Nahantu, west of Kurast. Summon the boss at the altar inside.
  5. Kill the boss and open its hoard. Spend your key on the hoard to claim the loot. Farm Urivar and other Lair Bosses for chances at Greater Lair Keys.
  6. Move up to Greater Lair Bosses. Use Greater Lair Keys on Duriel, Andariel, the Harbinger of Hatred or the Butcher for stronger loot pools.
  7. Summon Belial. After any Lair Boss kill, Belial may ambush you. Beating that ambush gives Betrayer's Husks; two of them summon Belial in the Palace of the Deceiver in Kehjistan.

Play the Pit alongside the ladder: it raises your Paragon and gives the upgrade materials you need to push higher Torment.

What do you need before you start?

Boss fights test single-target damage and survival more than speed. Before you spend keys:

  • A finished build core: your key uniques or aspects, a decent Paragon board and upgraded gear.
  • Resistances and armor for your Torment tier. Belial hits with Shadow and Poison, so all-resistance gear helps there.
  • Single-target damage. If the Pit boss at your tier is slow, a Lair Boss on the same Torment will be too.
  • Elixirs and incense for the extra stats on hard attempts.
  • A party plan. Up to four players can fight together; each extra player adds a chance at an extra unique from Belial's and other hoards.

Use only Blizzard-approved play: build planners and community guides are fine, but macros, bots and third-party programs that play for you break the rules.

Boss-by-boss overview

Lair Bosses: Varshan, Grigoire, Beast in the Ice, Lord Zir

The entry rungs. Each has a few signature attacks: Grigoire uses lightning, the Beast in the Ice uses frost and adds, Lord Zir uses blood and a big damage check. Learn the big telegraphs and keep damage up between them.

Urivar, Bartuc and Astaroth

Later Lair Bosses with their own pools. Urivar is worth farming early because it can give Greater Lair Keys. Keep moving, because these fights punish standing in the wrong spot for long.

Duriel and Andariel

The classic Greater Lair Bosses. Duriel burrows and charges, while Andariel uses poison and fire patterns. Both are a good test before moving up to Belial.

Harbinger of Hatred and the Butcher

Greater Lair Bosses with their own loot pools. The Harbinger is in Harbinger's Den in Nahantu and requires Vessel of Hatred. Bring mobility for both.

Belial, Lord of Lies

The top of the ladder. Belial deals heavy Shadow and Poison damage and is the hardest regular boss fight. When you open his hoard, you choose another boss's loot pool, which makes him the best target for a specific item once your build can handle him.

What loot and rewards can you get?

Loot is random, so treat this as what you might get:

  • Each boss's hoard gives a first unique from that boss's own pool. Additional uniques may roll from the general pool instead.
  • Party members add a chance at extra uniques, so grouping is worth it for farming.
  • Greater Lair Bosses and Belial have better Mythic unique chances than the regular Lair Bosses.
  • Belial's hoard can give an Ancestral unique and lets you choose which boss's pool to roll.
  • Higher Torment improves the quality and number of drops.

Drop rules have changed in recent patches, including how Mythic uniques roll from boss pools, so check our latest patch notes page before a long farm. What comes next after Season 15 is tracked on coming soon.

Tips to farm Diablo 4 bosses faster

  1. Farm the boss whose pool holds your target item, not the easiest one.
  2. Play on the highest Torment you can kill in well under a minute; that is where hoards pay off.
  3. Group up: extra players add unique chances and speed up kills.
  4. Stockpile keys first, then run bosses back to back to save travel time.
  5. Watch for Belial's ambush after every Lair Boss and be ready to fight it.
  6. Keep a boss-specific gear swap with extra resistances for Belial.
  7. Push the Pit between boss sessions so your Paragon keeps rising.
  8. Read each season's notes, since boss loot tables are adjusted often.

Diablo 4 boss ladder FAQ

What is the hardest boss in Diablo 4?

Belial, Lord of Lies, is the hardest boss on the regular boss ladder. He deals heavy Shadow and Poison damage, and you summon him with Betrayer's Husks earned from his ambushes after other Lair Boss kills. His difficulty also scales with your Torment tier, so a high-Torment Belial is the toughest boss fight most players will take on in Season 15.

How do you get Greater Lair Keys in Diablo 4?

Greater Lair Keys can drop when you kill Lair Bosses, and Urivar is a commonly recommended boss to farm for them. You use a Greater Lair Key to open the hoard of Duriel, Andariel, the Harbinger of Hatred or the Butcher. Since Lord of Hatred, all Greater Lair Bosses share this one key, which makes switching between them easy.

How do you summon Belial?

After you defeat any Lair Boss, Belial has a chance to ambush you. Beat the ambush to earn Betrayer's Husks. Two Husks let you summon Belial at the altar in the Palace of the Deceiver in Kehjistan. When you open his hoard, you choose which other boss's loot pool to roll, which makes him useful for chasing a specific item.

Which Diablo 4 boss drops Mythic uniques?

Every Lair Boss can drop Mythic uniques, but the chances are higher on Greater Lair Bosses and highest on Belial. Recent patches made Mythics from boss hoards roll from that boss's own unique pool, so choose the boss whose pool contains the Mythic you want. Higher Torment and group play improve your overall drops.

Do you need a key to fight a Lair Boss?

You can enter the lair and fight the boss, but you need the right key to open its hoard and get the main rewards. Regular Lair Bosses use a Lair Key, Greater Lair Bosses use a Greater Lair Key, and Belial is summoned with Betrayer's Husks. Collect keys first and run bosses back to back to save time.

Is a Diablo 4 boss carry bannable?

It can be. Blizzard's End User License Agreement forbids account sharing and paid boosting, and Blizzard can suspend accounts for it. Piloted carries, where someone logs in for you, carry the most risk. Self-play, where you join our group on your own account, carries less, and coaching carries none. No honest service can promise zero risk.
