Lost Ark is a free-to-play action MMORPG made by Smilegate RPG and played on PC through Steam. You explore the continent of Arkesia, follow a story about recovering the Lost Ark, then build item level to clear weekly raids. There is no single win: you win by beating raids, gates and higher difficulties.
What is Lost Ark?
Lost Ark is an online action role-playing game with fast, combo-based combat. Smilegate RPG built it in South Korea, and Amazon Games has published it in the West since February 11, 2022, when it launched in North America, Europe, Latin America and Oceania. It is free to play, with optional purchases such as cosmetics and a paid subscription perk.
Big change for 2026: Amazon announced in August that it will stop publishing the game, and Smilegate will run the Western servers directly from early 2027. The official notice says the game is not ending and that characters, items and progress move over automatically, as long as you do not opt out of the data transfer.

The newest class on the Western roadmap is the Warpweaver (a working title), which arrived in September 2026 with a Base Camp option that takes a fresh character to item level 1700 on pre-upgraded gear.
What is the objective of Lost Ark?
The overall goal has two halves. First, the story: you travel across Arkesia, gather the pieces needed to restore the light of the Lost Ark and stop the demon forces led by Kazeros. Second, the endgame: once the main story is behind you, the real loop is raising your item level so you can enter harder raids, earn gold and materials, and push your gear higher again.
A typical session is short and goal-driven. You log in, run your daily and weekly activities on several characters (your "roster"), then join a raid party or a solo raid. Each raid is split into gates, and clearing a gate pays out its rewards.
How do you win a match in Lost Ark?
Lost Ark has no match you win or lose in the way a shooter does. Winning means clearing content. Here is what that looks like in the main modes as of October 2026:
| Mode | Team size | How you win |
|---|---|---|
| Story and side quests | Solo | Finish the questline for each continent and unlock the next one |
| Kazeros raid (Solo Mode) | 1 player | Beat every gate of a raid chapter on your own for the weekly reward |
| Kazeros raid (Normal and Hard) | Party | Defeat each gate boss before the party runs out of revives |
| Kazeros Act 1 Extreme | 8 players | Clear the boss on Normal, Hard or Nightmare once per roster each week |
| Shadow Raid: Serca | Party or matchmaking | Defeat Serca; matchmaking mode removes the party-wipe rule |
| PvP | Teams | Win ranked or unranked rounds against other players |
Each raid has an item level gate. For example, the July 2026 Extreme version of Act 1 asked for 1720 on Normal, 1750 on Hard and 1770 on Nightmare. The Belgardin Shadow Raid, an eight-player fight that also unlocks a new bracer slot, is on the Western roadmap for October 2026.
How does ranked or progression work?
Progress in Lost Ark is measured mostly by item level, not by a ranked ladder. You raise it by honing (upgrading) gear with materials from raids and dailies. Most raids pay out once per week per character, and the weekly reset sets the pace. Solo Mode now covers the Kazeros chapters through Act 4 and the Denouement, so a newer player can see the story's raid finale without a group, although solo runs pay part of their gold as character-bound.
PvP is a separate track with ranked and unranked play and its own rewards. For more guides as they are added, see our Lost Ark guides hub, and if you want the bigger picture across genres, browse every game explained.
Beginner tips to win more
- Pick a class you enjoy playing. You will run the same raids many times, so comfort beats any tier list.
- Use the catch-up tools. Base Camp and Solo Mode exist to get new characters into current content faster.
- Learn one gate at a time. Watch a short guide before each new gate; most wipes come from missed mechanics, not low damage.
- Build a roster slowly. Extra characters earn extra weekly rewards, but only add them once your main is comfortable.
- Do not rush honing. Failed upgrades burn materials. Plan around the weekly reset.
- Watch the transition news. Keep your Steam account linked and do not opt out if you want your progress to move to Smilegate in 2027.

Honest risk note: Lost Ark is played under Amazon Games' terms today and Smilegate's terms after the 2027 move, and both forbid sharing your account; paid boosting is also against the rules. Piloted orders, where a booster logs in, carry the most risk. Playing alongside a booster is lower risk, and coaching carries none because you keep full control. Read our account safety notice before ordering. We never sell accounts, gold, crystals, items, cheats or mods.

Lost Ark FAQ
Is Lost Ark free to play?
Yes. Lost Ark is free to download and play on PC through Steam. You can buy cosmetics, bundles and a subscription-style perk, but the story, raids and PvP are open to every player without paying. After the 2027 move to Smilegate the game stays on Steam, and you will not need to reinstall or buy it again.
Is Lost Ark shutting down in the West?
No. Amazon is stepping back as publisher, and Smilegate, the studio that made the game, will run the Western servers from early 2027. The official announcement says characters, items and wallet balances transfer automatically. Some data, such as mail and chat history, will not carry over, and players who opt out of the transfer lose their progress.
Can I play Lost Ark solo?
Mostly, yes. The story and side content are solo, and Solo Mode now covers the Kazeros raid chapters up to Act 4 and the Denouement. Solo clears count against the same weekly limit as group clears, and part of their gold is bound to the character. Extreme raids and some Shadow Raid difficulties still need a full group.
What does winning mean in Lost Ark?
There is no final victory screen. Most players treat clearing raids as the win: beating every gate of a raid, then repeating it on harder difficulties for better rewards. Some aim for titles from Nightmare clears, some for PvP rank, and some simply want to finish the story and the final Kazeros chapter.
What is item level in Lost Ark?
Item level is the average power of your equipped gear, and it decides which raids you can enter. You raise it by honing gear with materials earned from raids and daily activities. Each raid lists a minimum item level for each difficulty, so planning your upgrades around the weekly reset is the main way to progress.
How long does it take to reach endgame in Lost Ark?
It depends on how you start. Following the story yourself takes many hours across several continents. If you want to skip ahead, the Base Camp option released with the September 2026 class lets a new character jump to item level 1700 with pre-upgraded gear, which is enough for the solo Kazeros chapters.
