Clash Royale is a free-to-play real-time card battle game from Supercell for mobile and PC. You build an eight-card deck, spend elixir to deploy troops, spells and buildings, and attack your opponent's three towers. Destroy the King Tower for an instant win, or end with more crowns than your rival.

What is the objective of Clash Royale?

Long term, you unlock and upgrade cards, climb Trophy Road through its arenas and, once you are strong enough, compete in Ranked. Inside one battle the aim is to take down more of your opponent's towers than they take of yours.

Each side has a King Tower in the back and two Princess Towers in front, with a river and two bridges in between. You hold four cards at a time from your deck of eight. Elixir fills up on its own to a cap of 10, and every card costs elixir to play. The skill is in spending it well: defending cheaply, then turning that defense into a counterattack.

How do you win a battle in Clash Royale?

Every tower you destroy earns one crown. The King Tower is worth the full three crowns and ends the battle at once. If time runs out, the player with more crowns wins.

Regular time lasts three minutes, and elixir comes twice as fast in the last minute. If crowns are level, the battle goes to overtime, where the first tower to fall wins. If no tower falls in overtime, a tiebreaker decides it: the player whose weakest tower has the least health loses. Elixir speeds up again late in overtime.

Mode Team size How you win
Trophy Road battles 1v1 More crowns or the King Tower; wins add trophies
Ranked 1v1 Same battle rules; wins move you up steps in your league
2v2 2v2 You and a partner share one side and take more crowns
Challenges and tournaments 1v1 Win battles in the event to earn its rewards

Special events rotate each season. Shocktober, for example, has a Spooky Chess League, several C.H.A.O.S variants, a Global Tournament and a 20-Win Challenge.

How does Ranked work in Clash Royale?

Trophy Road is where everyone starts. You gain trophies for wins, lose some for losses, and unlock new arenas as you climb. It tops out at 14,000 trophies across 32 arenas.

Ranked, which used to be called Path of Legends, is a separate ladder. It has its own matchmaking, its own card-level rule so fully maxed collections do not automatically dominate, and step-based leagues: Master I, Master II, Master III, Champion, Grand Champion, Royal Champion and Ultimate Champion. A win moves you up one step and a loss moves you down one, until Ultimate Champion, which uses a rating instead.

Supercell changed the unlock point in 2026. As of October 2026 you need 13,500 trophies to qualify, and the plan is for it to return to 14,000 in November. Players who already qualified keep access. Check the Ranked screen in game for the figure in effect today. More detailed Clash Royale guides will be posted on our Clash Royale guides hub.

Beginner tips to win more in Clash Royale

  • Do not overspend early. Let elixir build in the first minute and react to what your opponent plays.
  • Defend on your side. Troops that survive a good defense can cross the bridge as a cheap counterattack.
  • Know your win condition. Build the deck around one or two cards that actually hit towers, such as a Hog Rider or a Giant.
  • Keep the deck balanced. Include a cheap spell, a big spell, an air defense and a mix of cheap and costly cards.
  • Track their cycle. Remember which counters your opponent just used, then attack while those cards are out of hand.
  • Use double elixir. The last minute is when big pushes land. Save a strong combo for it.
  • Do not panic on one tower. A 1-0 lead wins the game if you defend well to the end.
  • Stick with one deck. You learn far more by playing one deck many times than by switching after every loss.

Clash Royale FAQ

Is Clash Royale free to play?

Yes. Clash Royale is free to download and play on Android, iOS and Windows PC. Supercell sells optional items such as gems and the Pass Royale, which speed up progress and add cosmetics. You can reach high trophy counts and Ranked without paying, but it takes longer because card upgrades need gold and card copies that you collect over time.

How long is a Clash Royale battle?

Regular time is three minutes, and elixir flows twice as fast in the final minute. If both players have the same number of crowns, overtime starts and the first tower destroyed wins. If no tower falls, a tiebreaker gives the win to the player whose weakest tower has more health left. Most battles finish in three to five minutes.

How do you get three crowns in Clash Royale?

You get three crowns by destroying the enemy King Tower, which ends the battle instantly. The King Tower usually wakes up after a Princess Tower falls or after it is hit directly. Taking both Princess Towers also gives two crowns, and the third comes from the King Tower. Big pushes during double elixir are the most common way to finish one off.

When does Ranked unlock in Clash Royale?

As of October 2026 you need 13,500 trophies on Trophy Road to unlock Ranked. Supercell lowered the gate during 2026 and plans to raise it back to 14,000 in November 2026. If you already qualified in an earlier season, you keep access. The Ranked screen in game always shows the requirement currently in effect.

What is the best mode for Clash Royale beginners?

Trophy Road battles are the best place to start, because matchmaking pairs you with players at a similar trophy count and every win moves you forward. Friendly battles with clanmates are good for testing decks with no risk. Once you know a few decks, try 2v2 with a friend, then the seasonal challenges for extra rewards.

What is the current Clash Royale season?

As of October 2026 the live season is Season 88, Shocktober. It runs from October 5 to November 2, 2026, and adds an Electro Giant evolution, an Electro Wizard hero on the paid pass, an album event and themed challenges. Seasons change roughly monthly, so check the season screen in game for the newest one.
