Rainbow Six Siege, now called Siege X, is Ubisoft's 5v5 tactical shooter where attackers try to complete an objective inside a building and defenders fortify it to stop them. Rounds are won through the objective or by eliminating the other team. In ranked Bomb matches, the first team to four round wins takes the game.
What is Rainbow Six Siege?
Rainbow Six Siege is a close-quarters tactical shooter from Ubisoft that first launched in 2015. On June 10, 2025, it relaunched as Rainbow Six Siege X, which made the base game free to play and refreshed maps and systems. It runs on PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Xbox One and Series X|S.
Each player picks an operator, a specialist with a unique gadget, such as a breaching charge, a camera or a trap. Walls and floors can be blown open, so information and planning matter as much as aim. Free players get a selection of operators, Quick Match, Unranked and other casual modes. Ranked needs a paid edition of the game.
As of October 2026 the current season is Operation Split Fire (Year 11 Season 3), which launched on September 1, 2026. It added Noor, a defender built to counter shield operators, a 3v3 Arcade playlist and a basement bomb site on Villa. Our Rainbow Six Siege services page lists what we can help with.

What is the objective of Rainbow Six Siege?
Across a match, you want to win more rounds than the other team while switching between attack and defence. Each round opens with a short preparation phase. Attackers use drones to scout where the objective is and who is guarding it, while defenders reinforce walls, set traps and get into position.
Then the action phase starts on a timer. Attackers have to breach the building and complete the objective. Defenders only have to stop them, either by fighting or simply by holding out until time runs out. That gives defence a big advantage if you stay patient.
How do you win a match in Rainbow Six Siege?
Siege has three classic objective types. Ranked uses Bomb, where attackers must plant a defuser at one of two bomb sites. If they plant and the defuser's countdown finishes, they win. Defenders can win by disabling the defuser, by running out the clock before any plant, or by eliminating all attackers. Even if the attackers are wiped after planting, defenders still need to disable the defuser.
| Mode | Team size | How you win |
|---|---|---|
| Bomb (Ranked) | 5v5 | Attackers plant the defuser and protect it; defenders stop or disable it. First to 4 round wins; at 3-3 overtime runs to 5 |
| Secure Area | 5v5 | Attackers hold the room with the container while no defender is inside; defenders contest or run out the clock |
| Hostage | 5v5 | Attackers extract the hostage; defenders hold until time ends. Killing the hostage loses the round |
| Arcade 3v3 | 3v3 | Shorter matches for smaller teams, added with Split Fire; check the playlist for its exact rules |
Each team can also win any round by eliminating the whole enemy team. In ranked, both teams ban operators before the match, and sides swap during the game, so you need to know both an attacker and a defender plan for every map.
How does ranked or progression work?
Ranked opens at clearance level 50 once you own a paid edition and have two-step verification switched on for your Ubisoft account. Clearance levels come from playing any mode and completing challenges.
The ladder runs Copper, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Emerald, Diamond and Champion, each with five divisions. Since Ranked 3.0 arrived on June 2, 2026, your visible Rank Points also decide matchmaking, and each season starts with five placement matches. The full breakdown is in R6 ranks explained for Siege X, and every Siege post lives on the Rainbow Six Siege guides hub.
Beginner tips to win more
- Always drone first. Knowing where defenders sit is worth more than any gun.
- Pick a few simple operators. Learn two attackers and two defenders before branching out.
- Reinforce the right walls on defence. Ask teammates which walls matter, then reinforce those first.
- Let the clock work for you. As a defender you do not need to chase kills; you need to survive.
- Listen carefully. Footsteps, drones and breaching sounds tell you where the next attack comes from.
- Do not shoot the hostage. In Hostage rounds, careless spraying can lose the round for your team.
- Play Quick Match and Unranked first. They help you learn maps and earn clearance levels before ranked.

Rainbow Six Siege FAQ
Is Rainbow Six Siege free to play?
Yes, the base game is free since the Siege X relaunch on June 10, 2025. Free players can use Quick Match, Unranked and other casual modes with a starter set of operators, and unlock more by playing. Ranked and the Siege Cup need a paid edition. Players who already owned Siege keep full access.
How long is a Rainbow Six Siege match?
A ranked Bomb match is first to four round wins, with overtime at 3-3, so it usually lasts around 25 to 40 minutes. Each round has a short preparation phase and a timed action phase of about three minutes. Arcade and 3v3 playlists are shorter, which makes them handy for practice.
What level do you need for ranked in Siege?
Ranked unlocks at clearance level 50. You also need a paid edition of the game and two-step verification switched on for your Ubisoft account. Clearance levels come from playing any mode and completing challenges, so Quick Match and Unranked are the usual way to get there. Unranked opens earlier, at clearance level 20.
What is the easiest mode for Siege beginners?
Quick Match is the gentlest start because it is casual and has no rank at stake. Play it to learn a few maps and operators, then move to Unranked, which uses the ranked rules without affecting your rank. Bomb is the mode to practise most, since that is what ranked uses.
How do you win a round in Siege?
Complete the objective or eliminate the whole enemy team. Attackers in Bomb must plant the defuser and protect it until it finishes. Defenders win by disabling it, by stopping a plant until time runs out or by eliminating every attacker. The first team to four round wins takes a ranked match.
Do you sell R6 Credits or accounts?
No. We never sell accounts, R6 Credits, skins, items, cheats or mods. Our Siege services are clearance leveling, the Ranked unlock and battle pass tiers, all earned through normal play. Read our account safety notice before choosing a piloted order. Coaching and play-along options keep your login with you, while piloted orders carry the most risk.
