Counter-Strike 2 (CS2) is Valve's free-to-play 5v5 tactical shooter on PC. Terrorists try to plant a bomb at one of two sites, and Counter-Terrorists try to stop or defuse it. You win a round through the objective or by eliminating the other team, and the first side to 13 rounds wins the match.
What is Counter-Strike 2?
Counter-Strike 2 is the current version of Valve's long-running Counter-Strike series. It released on September 27, 2023, for Windows and Linux, replacing Global Offensive and moving the game to the Source 2 engine. CS2 is free to play, but the Premier ranked mode needs the paid Prime Status upgrade.
There are no hero abilities here. Everyone has the same weapons and grenades, bought each round with money earned from kills, round wins and the bomb. That makes aim, grenade use, map knowledge and team economy the whole game.
As of October 2026 the game is in Premier Season 5, which started on July 6, 2026. That update brought Cache back into the Active Duty map pool, removed Overpass and soft-reset Premier ratings. If you want help with any of this, our CS2 boosting and coaching page explains what we offer.

What is the objective of Counter-Strike 2?
Over a full match, the goal is to win more rounds than the other team. Premier and Competitive matches use 24 regulation rounds with a side swap after round 12, so the first team to 13 wins.
Each round has its own goal. On bomb-defusal maps, the Terrorists try to plant the C4 at bombsite A or B and protect it until it explodes. The Counter-Terrorists try to keep them off the sites, and if the bomb does go down, defuse it in time. A few casual maps use Hostage Rescue instead, where Counter-Terrorists try to lead hostages out while Terrorists guard them.
How do you win a match in Counter-Strike 2?
Terrorists take a round by detonating the bomb or eliminating every Counter-Terrorist. Counter-Terrorists take it by defusing, by wiping out the Terrorists before a plant, or by letting the round clock run out with no bomb down. Once the bomb is planted, killing the Terrorists is not enough on its own; it still has to be defused.
| Mode | Team size | How you win |
|---|---|---|
| Premier | 5v5 | First to 13 rounds; at 12-12 one overtime of six rounds is played, first to 16, and 15-15 is a draw |
| Competitive | 5v5 | First to 13 rounds on the map you choose; 12-12 ends in a draw |
| Wingman | 2v2 | First to 9 rounds on a single bombsite |
| Retakes | 3 Terrorists vs 4 Counter-Terrorists | Bomb is already planted; first to 8 rounds |
| Deathmatch | Free-for-all | No rounds; score the most when the 10-minute timer ends |
| Arms Race | Free-for-all | Move through a set list of weapons with each kill; the first golden-knife kill wins |
Casual uses the same bomb rules with more relaxed settings and no rank, which makes it a good first stop alongside Deathmatch.
How does ranked or progression work?
CS2 has two ranked ladders. Premier gives you a single number called CS Rating. You need ten wins before it appears, and it is shown in colour bands from grey through light blue, dark blue, purple, pink and red up to gold above 30,000. Each Premier season soft-resets ratings, so everyone climbs again.
Competitive ranks you separately on every map with Skill Groups, so you can be strong on Mirage and still placing on Nuke. For the colour bands in detail, read CS2 Premier rating explained, and for practical climbing habits, our Premier tips to climb. Everything else we write about the game is on the CS2 guides hub.
Beginner tips to win more
- Learn three maps well. Mirage, Dust II and Inferno appear constantly, so know their callouts and common angles first.
- Stand still to shoot. Counter-strafe before firing, and tap or burst at range instead of holding the trigger.
- Buy as a team. If the team cannot afford rifles and armour, save together so the next round is a full buy.
- Learn a few smokes and flashes. One smoke that blocks a key angle is worth more than an extra pistol.
- Trade your teammates. Stay close enough that if a teammate dies, you can kill their attacker straight away.
- Do not chase kills after the plant. As a Terrorist, play the bomb timer; as a Counter-Terrorist, check the clock before risking a defuse.
- Warm up in Deathmatch. Ten minutes there sharpens your aim before Premier.

Counter-Strike 2 FAQ
Is Counter-Strike 2 free?
Yes, CS2 is free to download and play on Steam. Casual, Deathmatch, Competitive and the other modes are open to everyone. The Premier mode, which gives you a CS Rating, needs the paid Prime Status upgrade, and Prime also adds a weekly drop based on the XP you earn. Skins are cosmetic only.
How long is a CS2 match?
A Premier or Competitive match is first to 13 rounds, so it usually takes 35 to 50 minutes, and Premier overtime can add more. Wingman is first to 9 rounds and is much quicker. Deathmatch lasts 10 minutes, which is why many players use it as a warm-up before ranked.
How do you get a CS Rating in Premier?
You need Prime Status, then you must win ten Premier matches. Losses and draws do not count toward that total. After the tenth win your CS Rating appears and moves up or down with every match. Each Premier season soft-resets ratings, so your number has to be earned again. Competitive map ranks are tracked separately.
What happens at 12-12 in CS2?
It depends on the mode. In Competitive, a 12-12 match simply ends in a draw. In Premier, the teams play one overtime period of six rounds, three on each side, and the first to 16 wins. If overtime ends 15-15, the match is recorded as a draw. Plan for a longer session when you queue Premier.
What is the best mode for CS2 beginners?
Start with Casual and Deathmatch to learn the maps and get comfortable with aim. Wingman is a good next step, because 2v2 on a single bombsite teaches the bomb rules quickly. Move into Competitive on one or two maps you know before trying Premier. In Premier, every match moves your CS Rating, so arrive with some confidence.
Do you sell CS2 skins or accounts?
No. We never sell accounts, skins, cases, items, cheats or mods. We sell playing time and teaching: Premier and Competitive wins, FACEIT levels and demo review. Coaching and self-play options keep your Steam login with you. Read our account safety page to compare the risk of piloted, self-play and coaching orders before you choose one.
