Overwatch is a free-to-play 5v5 team hero shooter made by Blizzard Entertainment. Each team has a Tank, two Damage and two Support heroes. You win by completing the map objective, such as holding a control point, escorting a payload or pushing a robot further than the enemy team can.
What is Overwatch?
Overwatch is Blizzard's team hero shooter. It first launched as Overwatch 2 in October 2022, replacing the 2016 original, and in February 2026 Blizzard dropped the "2" so the game is simply called Overwatch again. It is free to play, with a paid Battle Pass and cosmetic shop, and it has cross-play across PC and consoles.
Every player picks a hero with a fixed kit of abilities and an ultimate. Heroes sit in three roles: Tanks soak damage and make space, Damage heroes secure eliminations, and Supports heal and enable their team. Blizzard now runs six seasons a year. Season 5, A Grim Doctrine, began on October 6, 2026 and added the vampiric support hero Doctrine, moved Sombra from Damage to Support, and brought a new Escort map, Grímsvötn.

What is the objective of Overwatch?
Across a season, the goal is to improve: win more matches, climb Competitive, and unlock heroes and rewards along the way. Inside one match, the goal is always tied to the map objective, not to kills. Kills only matter because they remove enemies from the point or the payload for a few seconds.
How long a match lasts depends on the mode and on how close the two teams are, since overtime can stretch a tight round. Your team wins by completing the objective of that map, which might be holding a point, moving a payload or pushing a robot. A team with fewer eliminations that plays the objective well will often beat a team that chases kills.
How do you win a match in Overwatch?
Quick Play and Competitive rotate through several map types. Each one has its own win condition, summarised here:
| Mode | Team size | How you win |
|---|---|---|
| Control | 5v5 | Capture and hold one central point until your meter hits 100%. Win two rounds of a best-of-three. |
| Escort | 5v5 | On attack, move the payload to the last checkpoint before time runs out. Each team gets a turn and the side that pushes further wins. |
| Hybrid | 5v5 | Take the first point, then escort the payload to the end. Teams swap sides and the better attack wins. |
| Push | 5v5 | Walk the shared robot to push your barricade toward the enemy base. The team with the most distance at the end wins. |
| Flashpoint | 5v5 | Points unlock one at a time on a big map. First team to capture three wins. |
| Clash | 5v5 | Fight over a line of five points. Win by taking all five or by reaching the score limit first. |
| Stadium | 5v5 | Buy hero upgrades between rounds. Best of seven in Competitive, best of five in Unranked. |
In all of them, the fight is won when your team groups up, uses cooldowns and ultimates together, and takes the space first. Overtime keeps a round alive while a team is touching the objective, so never give up a contested point early.
How does ranked or progression work?
Competitive opens on a new account after 20 wins in unranked play, usually Quick Play. You then play for a rank in tiers from Bronze up through Champion, with five divisions in each, and a regional Top 500 leaderboard above that. Your progress bar moves after every Competitive match, and Role Queue tracks a separate rank for Tank, Damage and Support.
For every tier, how placements work and the Season 5 Top 500 changes, read our Overwatch ranks explained guide. To pick a hero that climbs well right now, see the best Overwatch heroes for ranked. All of our Overwatch articles live on the Overwatch guides hub.
Beginner tips to win more
- Play the objective. Stand on the point or the payload when the fight is won. Time on objective wins rounds.
- Group up before you fight. Walking in one at a time lets the enemy win five small fights instead of one even one.
- Learn one hero per role. A small pool you know well beats a wide pool you play badly, and it keeps Role Queue flexible.
- Watch the enemy ultimates. Bait out big ultimates before you commit your own.
- Use cover and high ground. Stepping out of sight between shots keeps your Supports from overworking.
- Swap when a plan fails. Heroes can be changed mid-match, so counter what is beating you.
- Talk briefly. Calling low-health targets and enemy ultimates helps more than long chat.

Overwatch FAQ
Is Overwatch free to play?
Yes. Overwatch is free to download and play on PC and consoles, and you can play it fully without spending anything. Blizzard makes money from an optional premium Battle Pass and a cosmetic shop. Skins and other cosmetics do not change hero stats, so spending money never makes your hero stronger in a match. The game also has full cross-play between PC and console players.
Is it called Overwatch or Overwatch 2?
It is called Overwatch again. The game launched as Overwatch 2 in October 2022 and replaced the original 2016 game. In February 2026 Blizzard dropped the number, so the current live game, its seasons and its patch notes now use the plain Overwatch name. Older guides and videos may still say Overwatch 2, but they refer to the same game.
How long is an Overwatch match?
Length depends on the mode and how even the teams are, and Blizzard does not publish a fixed match time. Control maps can end quickly if one team wins two rounds in a row, while close Escort or Hybrid matches with overtime can run longer. Stadium matches are longer because they are best of five in Unranked and best of seven in Competitive, with upgrade shopping between rounds.
How do you unlock Competitive in Overwatch?
A new account needs 20 wins in unranked modes, usually Quick Play, before Competitive opens. Once it opens, you play matches in Role Queue or Open Queue and your rank appears and moves as you win and lose. Our ranks guide explains every tier, the Top 500 leaderboard and how placements work.
What is the best mode for beginners?
Quick Play is the best place to start. It uses the same maps and rules as Competitive but without rank pressure, and wins there count toward unlocking Competitive. Try a few heroes in each role, learn the map types, then focus on one or two heroes you enjoy before you start ranked games.
What is new in Overwatch Season 5?
Season 5, A Grim Doctrine, began on October 6, 2026. It added Doctrine, a new support hero who heals allies and drains enemies, moved Sombra from Damage to Support with a new Weaken ability, and introduced Grímsvötn, a new Escort map. It also brought back older Battle Passes and a Halloween event mode.
