Overwatch ranks go Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Emerald, Diamond, Master, Grandmaster and Champion, each with five divisions from 5 (lowest) to 1. Top 500 is a separate regional leaderboard above them. Your rank progress bar moves after every competitive match, and you move up a division when it fills. Role Queue tracks a separate rank per role.
What are the Overwatch ranks in order?
As of October 2026 (Reign of Talon, Season 5) Overwatch has nine competitive ranks, plus the Top 500 leaderboard. From lowest to highest:
| # | Rank | Divisions | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Bronze | 5 → 1 | Starting rank for many new competitive players |
| 2 | Silver | 5 → 1 | |
| 3 | Gold | 5 → 1 | Gold and Platinum hold most players, per Blizzard |
| 4 | Platinum | 5 → 1 | |
| 5 | Emerald | 5 → 1 | New in Season 4 (August 11, 2026) |
| 6 | Diamond | 5 → 1 | |
| 7 | Master | 5 → 1 | |
| 8 | Grandmaster | 5 → 1 | |
| 9 | Champion | 5 → 1 | Top divisions made more exclusive in Season 4 |
| — | Top 500 | Leaderboard | Per region and platform; ranked by actual rank since Season 5 |
Inside each rank, division 5 is the lowest and division 1 the highest. So the climb goes Gold 5, Gold 4 and so on up to Gold 1, then Platinum 5. The game was renamed from its old sequel title to simply "Overwatch" in early 2026; the ranking system carried over.
What is the Emerald rank in Overwatch?
Emerald is a new rank between Platinum and Diamond, added with Season 4: Heroes of Busan on August 11, 2026. Blizzard's patch notes say most players sit in Gold and Platinum, so a rank in the middle of the skill curve gives a more accurate picture of skill and a new goal to chase. The redistribution mainly moved former Platinum and Diamond players into Emerald, and Emerald has its own titles and weapon charms.
What this means for you: if you were low Diamond before Season 4, you may now be Emerald with no change in skill. It is a relabel, not a demotion. Season 4 also added a Rank Distribution Indicator on the Competitive overview, which shows how your rank compares with every other player in that queue. That is the most reliable "top x%" figure you can get; for other games see our rank distribution guide.
How does Overwatch rank progress work?
Overwatch no longer makes you wait several wins for a rank update. After every competitive match your progress bar moves up or down. When it fills you go up a division; if it empties you can drop one.
How much it moves depends mostly on your hidden matchmaking rating compared with your visible rank. If you are winning against stronger lobbies than your rank suggests, the bar moves faster. The post-match screen shows modifiers that explain the change. One worth knowing is Wide: if you queue in a group with a wide spread of ranks, you gain and lose less progress per match.
Each win also earns 10 Competitive Points (5 for a draw, 0 for a loss). You spend these on golden and other weapon variants. End-of-season rewards such as titles are based on your highest rank reached that season, not where you finish.
Do you have a different rank for each role?
Yes, in Role Queue. Overwatch's main competitive mode is 5v5 Role Queue (one tank, two damage, two support), and it tracks a separate rank for Tank, Damage and Support. It is common to be Diamond on support and Gold on tank. Open Queue, where anyone can play any hero, has one rank of its own.
Roles also shift between seasons. In Season 5 Blizzard moved Sombra from Damage to Support, so a Sombra main now climbs on their support rank. If you want help with a specific role, say so when you order: our boosts are priced per role and you can choose the heroes played.
How do placements and rank resets work?
Your first competitive matches set your starting rank, and the game shows a predicted rank while you play them. That applies to brand-new competitive players, a role you have never played in competitive, and seasons where Blizzard resets ranks.
Not every season resets. Blizzard ran one alongside the Season 4 Emerald change in August 2026. When a reset happens your hidden rating usually carries over, so a few good placement games put you close to your previous level. Our ranked season reset dates guide tracks resets across games.
How does Top 500 work in Season 5?
Top 500 is a live leaderboard, split by region and by controller or keyboard and mouse. It runs on the Challenger system, which tracks a Challenger Score for high-ranked players (Blizzard raised the score thresholds for Grandmaster and Champion in Season 4).
Season 5 (patch of October 6, 2026) changed how it works:
- The leaderboard now sorts by rank by default, not by Challenger Score.
- End-of-season title rewards now reference rank instead of Challenger Score.
- The Heat Bonus was removed.
- Challenger Score is now only the entry requirement: the 500 players with the highest score qualify, then they are ordered by actual rank.
Blizzard's stated aim is to reward the most skilled players rather than those who play the most. Because Top 500 depends on what hundreds of other players do, nobody can honestly promise it. We sell climbs up to Champion 5 and do not sell Top 500.
How do you unlock competitive in Overwatch?
New accounts must win 20 unranked games before competitive unlocks. Quick Play is the usual route. If you don't want to grind it, our competitive unlock service is $15 and usually takes 1–3 days, but note it is piloted, so it carries the same account risk described below.
Once unlocked, pick the role you are strongest on for your first placements. Our best Overwatch heroes for ranked guide covers which heroes are performing well this season.
How do you rank up faster in Overwatch?
- Focus one role. Each role has its own rank, so spreading games across three roles triples the work.
- Play three or four heroes well. One main, one or two counters, one safe option for when you get countered.
- Use the replay viewer. Watch your deaths from your losses. Most come from being in the wrong place, not losing aim duels.
- Queue with a close-ranked friend. A wide group gains less progress per match.
- Stop on a losing streak. Two or three losses in a row is a signal to take a break. See our guide to stop tilting.

Price my boostAsk Boost Up AIHow much does an Overwatch rank boost cost?
Here are our current piloted prices for Bronze to Gold at the time of writing. Duo, where you play on your own account with the booster, costs 1.5× the piloted price. Platinum, Emerald and higher are priced in the calculator on the Overwatch boosting page, so you see the exact figure for your role and division before paying.
| Rank | Per division (piloted) | Whole rank (5 divisions) | Per win (piloted) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bronze | $6 | $30 | $3 |
| Silver | $7 | $35 | $3.5 |
| Gold | $9 | $45 | $4 |
Example: Gold 5 to Platinum 5 on one role is five divisions at $9, so $45 piloted or $67.5 in duo. Placement games are $4 each piloted. At Gold to Diamond a booster usually clears one division in about 1–2 days. If you would rather improve yourself, coaching with a high-rank coach is $25 per hour, and our coaching vs boosting guide compares the two.
Honest risk note: Blizzard's End User License Agreement forbids sharing your account and paid boosting, and Blizzard can suspend accounts for it. Piloted boosts carry real risk, duo less, coaching none. Read account safety and is boosting bannable first. Every order shows the price up front, uses a vetted, ID-verified booster and a private order page with progress screenshots; see how it works.
Overwatch ranks FAQ
What is the lowest rank in Overwatch?
Bronze 5 is the lowest rank in Overwatch. Each rank has five divisions, and 5 is the lowest within a rank, so the order runs Bronze 5, Bronze 4 up to Bronze 1, then Silver 5. Placing in Bronze is common for new competitive players and says nothing about how far you can climb; progress moves after every match.
What is the highest rank in Overwatch?
Champion 1 is the highest rank, and Top 500 is a separate leaderboard above it for the best players in each region and platform. Since Season 5 (October 2026), Top 500 qualifiers are those with the 500 highest Challenger Scores, and they are then ordered by actual rank rather than by score.
When was Emerald added to Overwatch?
Emerald arrived with Season 4: Heroes of Busan on August 11, 2026. It sits between Platinum and Diamond and has five divisions like the other ranks. Blizzard added it because most players were in Gold and Platinum, and a mid-curve rank gives a more accurate skill picture. Many former low Diamond and high Platinum players moved into Emerald.
How many wins do you need to unlock Overwatch competitive?
New accounts need 20 wins in unranked play, usually Quick Play, before competitive unlocks. After that you play your first competitive matches to set a starting rank per role. If you play Role Queue, each of Tank, Damage and Support has its own rank to set.
Why did my Overwatch rank go down after a win?
It should not drop after a win, but your progress can move less than you expect. Modifiers on the post-match screen explain why, such as playing in a wide group with very different ranks, which reduces gains and losses. If your visible rank is above your hidden rating, wins give smaller gains until the two line up.
What rank is top 1% in Overwatch?
Blizzard does not publish a fixed rank for top 1%, and the split changed when Emerald was added in Season 4. The most reliable way to see your percentile is the Rank Distribution Indicator added to the Competitive overview in Season 4, which compares your rank with all players in that queue.
