Teamfight Tactics (TFT) is a free auto battler from Riot Games. Eight players each draft champions, place them on a hex board and earn gold between rounds, while the fights play out on their own. Losing a fight costs health, and the last player still standing wins the lobby.
What is Teamfight Tactics?
Teamfight Tactics is an auto battler, a strategy game where you build and position a team but do not control units during combat. Riot Games developed and publishes it as a spin-off of League of Legends, using the same champions. It arrived on PC on June 26, 2019, inside the League client, and on Android and iOS on March 19, 2020. Today it runs on Windows, macOS and mobile, with cross-play between them.
TFT is reshuffled every few months with a new set: a fresh roster of champions, traits and a headline mechanic. As of October 2026 the live set is Set 18, Enchanted Wilds, which launched on August 26, 2026. Its new mechanic is Wisps, one-off bonuses you can buy from the shop during planning that grant things like combat effects, gold or experience. It is also the first TFT set built partly on Unreal Engine.

What is the objective of Teamfight Tactics?
Over a season, the goal is to finish high in as many lobbies as possible, which is what moves you up the ranked ladder. Inside one game, the goal is to outlast the other seven players.
A game runs in stages of short rounds. In most rounds you are paired against another player's board; some rounds pit you against computer-controlled monsters that drop items and loot. Between fights you spend gold to buy champions from a shop, reroll the shop for new options, or level up so you can field more units. Saved gold earns interest, and win or loss streaks pay bonus gold, so managing money is half the game.
Champions share traits, and fielding several with the same trait unlocks bonuses. Three copies of a champion combine into a stronger two-star version. Once per stage there is a shared carousel where players pick a unit with an item, with the lowest-health players choosing first. When you lose a fight, you take damage based on how many enemy units survived and how late in the game it is.
How do you win a game of Teamfight Tactics?
In every TFT mode, you are fighting to be the last one alive, and your final position decides how well you did. In ranked, a top 4 finish counts as a good result. Here are the ways to play as of October 2026.
| Mode | Team size | How you win |
|---|---|---|
| Normal | 8 solo players | Be the last player standing; any top 4 is a solid game |
| Ranked | 8 solo players | Finish in the top 4 to gain LP; 1st gains the most |
| Double Up | 4 teams of 2 | Be the last pair alive; partners share one health bar and can send units and gold to each other |
Riot also runs limited-time modes and events during the year, so check the play menu for extras. The older Hyper Roll mode was retired by Riot in 2025, so guides that still mention it are out of date.
How does ranked work in TFT?
TFT ranked has no level requirement: you can queue from account level 1. Tiers mirror League, from Iron up through Emerald and Diamond to Master, Grandmaster and Challenger. Finishing 1st to 4th never costs LP, finishing 5th to 8th never gains it, and 100 LP moves you up a division. A fresh set brings a soft reset and five placement games.
Your TFT rank is separate from your League rank. Our TFT ranks explained guide covers LP, placements and demotion rules in detail, and you will find every TFT article on our TFT guides hub.
Beginner tips to win more
- Aim for top 4, not just 1st. Consistent 3rd and 4th place games climb faster than gambling for wins.
- Learn two or three reliable comps. Knowing a few strong team builds for the current set beats improvising every game.
- Keep a gold bank. Saved gold earns interest every round and gives you room to roll for upgrades later.
- Build items for your main carry. Three good items on the right champion often decide a fight.
- Scout other boards. If two players want your champions, pivot rather than fighting over the same pool.
- Do not ignore health. Spend gold to stabilize before your health gets too low to recover.
- Use Wisps with a plan. Take the ones that speed up your build instead of grabbing whatever appears.
How can Boosting Games help with Teamfight Tactics?
Boosting Games offers fixed-price TFT services. The prices below are starting prices as of October 2026, and the exact price for the option you pick shows before checkout. Every option is in our Teamfight Tactics services collection.
| Service | What you get | Price |
|---|---|---|
| TFT Top 4 Finishes Pack | Five ranked games finished in the top 4, played as a duo by default. | From $12 |
| TFT Live Coaching Pack | Live sessions with a high-rank coach on econ, rolling, positioning and pivots. | From $45 |
Honest risk note: Riot's Terms of Service forbid account sharing and letting someone else play on your account, and Riot looks for boosting. Piloted orders carry the most risk, including suspensions or a ban. Duo games, where you queue with a booster and keep your login, carry less risk, and coaching carries none. Please read our account safety notice before ordering. We never sell accounts, Riot Points, Little Legends, cosmetics, cheats or mods.

Teamfight Tactics FAQ
Is Teamfight Tactics free to play?
Yes. TFT is free on PC, Mac and mobile, and you can play every mode without paying. Riot sells cosmetic items such as Little Legends, arenas and passes, but none of them change how strong your board is. You only need a Riot account, and the same account works on desktop and phone thanks to cross-play.
Do I need to play League of Legends to play TFT?
No. TFT uses League champions and lives in the same client on PC, but it is a separate game with its own rules and its own rank. Knowing the champions can help you guess what an ability does, yet complete newcomers learn TFT fine. On mobile it is a standalone app that does not need League installed at all.
Can I play TFT on my phone?
Yes. TFT has been on Android and iOS since March 2020 as a standalone app, and it also runs on Windows and macOS. Cross-play links them, so you can queue with friends on other devices, and progress follows your Riot account. That makes it easy to learn on a computer and keep playing on your phone when you are away from your desk.
What counts as a win in TFT ranked?
In ranked, any finish from 1st to 4th counts as a good result: those places never lose LP, and 1st gains the most. Finishing 5th to 8th never gains LP, and 8th loses the most. That is why steady top 4 finishes are the fastest way to climb, even if you rarely take 1st place outright.
What is the best TFT mode for beginners?
Start with normal games, which use the same rules as ranked but without LP at stake, so you can try comps freely. Double Up is also friendly for newcomers because a partner shares your health bar and can send you units and gold. Move to ranked once you know a few reliable team builds for the current set.
What is new in TFT Set 18?
Set 18, Enchanted Wilds, launched on August 26, 2026, with a fresh roster of champions and traits. Its headline mechanic is Wisps, single-use bonuses you can buy from the shop during planning that give effects such as combat boosts, gold or experience. It is also the first TFT set to use Unreal Engine for some of its content.
