TFT ranks run Iron, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Emerald and Diamond, each with four divisions (IV is lowest), then Master, Grandmaster and Challenger. Finishing in the top 4 of an eight-player lobby earns LP, 5th or lower loses it, and 100 LP promotes you. From Iron to Master you cannot drop down a whole tier.

TFT ranks in order

Teamfight Tactics uses the same tier names as League of Legends. The seven lower tiers each have four divisions, and division IV is the bottom of each tier. The three apex tiers have no divisions.

Tier Divisions Can you drop out of it?
Iron IV, III, II, I It is the bottom tier
Bronze IV, III, II, I No, tier demotion is off
Silver IV, III, II, I No, tier demotion is off
Gold IV, III, II, I No, tier demotion is off
Platinum IV, III, II, I No, tier demotion is off
Emerald IV, III, II, I No, tier demotion is off
Diamond IV, III, II, I No, tier demotion is off
Master None No, tier demotion is off
Grandmaster None Yes
Challenger None Yes

Emerald sits between Platinum and Diamond, the same as in League. Grandmaster and Challenger need a minimum LP and a top spot on your server, and those cutoffs are recalculated every day.

There is no level requirement: Riot lets you play TFT ranked from account level 1. TFT ranked games do not count toward League's ranked missions, and your TFT rank is separate from your League rank.

How does LP work in TFT?

TFT lobbies have eight players, so "winning" means something different. The rules are simple:

  • Top 4 (1st to 4th): you gain LP, or at worst lose none. A top 4 can never cost you LP.
  • Bottom 4 (5th to 8th): you lose LP, or at best gain none.
  • 1st and 8th swing the most. A first place is worth far more than a fourth.
  • 100 LP promotes you a division, and spare LP carries over. There are no promotion series.

Like League, the exact amount depends on your hidden MMR. If your MMR is above your visible rank, top 4s pay more and bottom 4s cost less. That is why two players can both finish 3rd and get different LP.

Because a top 4 never loses LP, consistency beats gambling. A player who finishes 3rd to 4th most games will climb steadily, while one who goes all-in for 1st and often ends up 7th will stall.

TFT placement matches and set resets

Ranked seasons now last about four months and follow each new set. As of October 2026 we are in Set 18, which launched in late August 2026, with the next set expected around December.

  • Five placement games: your first ranked game puts you at Iron II provisionally. If you ranked the season before, you start somewhere between Iron II and Bronze IV.
  • Fast LP during placements: provisional games can give up to 100 LP each and never take LP away, so new sets climb quickly at first.
  • Soft reset: each new set nudges everyone's MMR toward the middle, so strong players rise fast again and weaker players settle.

If you move server, your MMR comes with you, but you must replay all five placements and can place no higher than Iron II on the new server.

Demotion and decay rules

Since patch 11.22, Iron through Master cannot be demoted to a lower tier. You can still drop a division inside a tier (Gold I to Gold II, for example) if you are at 0 LP and your MMR is too low for your rank. Grandmaster and Challenger can still fall.

Decay at Master and above

Only Master, Grandmaster and Challenger decay. You can bank up to 14 games, and one banked game drains each day you do not play. With an empty bank, every idle day costs:

Tier LP lost per idle day (empty bank)
Master 50 LP
Grandmaster 150 LP
Challenger 250 LP

Decay cannot drop you out of Master or Diamond on its own.

Double Up and Hyper Roll ranks

Standard ranked is not the only ladder. Each mode tracks its own rating:

  • Double Up: two-player teams. Pairs can queue together at any rank, which makes it the easiest ranked mode to play with a friend.
  • Hyper Roll: a faster mode with color tiers instead of divisions: Gray, Green, Blue, Purple and Hyper.

For normal ranked, party size is limited by rank. Iron to Silver can invite up to Gold, Gold up to Platinum, Platinum to Diamond within one tier either way, and Master and above can only duo with someone within 400 LP.

What is a good TFT rank?

Riot does not publish a live distribution, and early-set numbers swing a lot because of placements and the soft reset. As a rough guide:

  • Gold and Platinum: you understand economy and can hit common comps.
  • Emerald and Diamond: strong. You read lobbies, pivot well and rarely bleed out.
  • Master and above: a small group of very consistent players; Grandmaster and Challenger are leaderboard-limited.

Season rewards start at Gold, so many players aim to hit Gold IV before a set ends.

How to climb TFT ranks

TFT rewards steady decisions more than flashy comps. These habits climb the most:

  1. Play for top 4, not 1st. A top 4 never loses LP. Stabilize your board early instead of greeding for a perfect late game.
  2. Learn economy. Hit 50 gold for maximum interest when you can, and know when to roll down instead.
  3. Master two or three flexible comps. Learn what they need and what they can pivot into, rather than forcing one line every game.
  4. Scout before positioning. Check the boards you are likely to face and move your carry away from their threats.
  5. Do not hold losing streaks too long. If your board is weak, level and stabilize. Bleeding HP for an extra interest gold often ends in 7th.
  6. Take breaks. Games run 30 to 40 minutes, and two bad ones in a row is the time to stop. Our guide on how to stop tilting helps.

When a boost or coaching makes sense

If you are short on time near the end of a set, or want a hand learning the meta, here is what our options cost at the time of writing, in USD:

Option Example Price Ban risk
Piloted rank boost Silver IV to Gold IV (4 divisions at $8.5) $34 Higher
Piloted rank boost Gold IV to Platinum IV (4 divisions at $10) $40 Higher
Duo / self-play boost Same climb, you play on your own account alongside a booster (1.5x) $60 Lower
Top 4 finishes pack 5 top 4s, Iron to Gold $12 Higher
Hyper Roll boost Gray to Green $9 Higher
Live coaching 2 one-hour sessions with a high-rank coach $45 None

Higher divisions cost more: Platinum is $13 a division, Emerald $17 and Diamond $30. We sell climbs up to Master, and in our calculator a "win" means a top 4 finish. Grandmaster and Challenger depend on a limited leaderboard, so we do not sell them. The Top 4 Finishes Pack, Hyper Roll boost and TFT live coaching pack have full details.

Honest risk note: Riot's Terms of Service forbid account sharing and playing on someone else's account to boost its rank, and Riot can suspend or ban accounts for it. Piloted boosts carry real risk, duo carries less because you stay on your own account, and coaching carries none. See our account safety page before ordering.

TFT ranks FAQ

What are the TFT ranks in order?

TFT ranks from lowest to highest are Iron, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Emerald, Diamond, Master, Grandmaster and Challenger. The first seven tiers each have four divisions, from IV (lowest) to I (highest). Master, Grandmaster and Challenger have no divisions. Grandmaster and Challenger need a minimum LP plus a top spot on your server, recalculated daily.

Do you lose LP for 4th place in TFT?

No. In Teamfight Tactics a top 4 finish can never lose LP, and a 5th place or lower can never gain LP. First place earns the most and 8th costs the most. The exact amount depends on your hidden MMR compared with your visible rank. If your MMR is higher than your rank, top 4 finishes pay more LP and bottom 4 finishes cost less.

Can you demote in TFT?

You cannot drop a whole tier between Iron and Master. Riot turned tier demotion off for those ranks in patch 11.22. You can still drop a division inside a tier, such as Gold I to Gold II, if you are at 0 LP and your MMR is too low for your rank. Grandmaster and Challenger can still be demoted, and decay applies from Master upward.

How many placement games are in TFT?

TFT has five placement games. Your first ranked game places you provisionally at Iron II, or between Iron II and Bronze IV if you ranked last season. Placement games give boosted LP, up to 100 per match, and never take LP away. After the five games you are placed into a league. Moving to a new server means replaying all five.

Is there a level requirement for TFT ranked?

No. Riot lets you play Teamfight Tactics ranked from account level 1, unlike League of Legends, which needs level 30. TFT ranked games do not count toward League’s ranked missions, and your TFT rank is separate from your League rank. Double Up and Hyper Roll also keep their own separate ratings.

When do TFT ranks reset?

TFT ranks follow the sets, so each ranked season lasts about four months. A new set applies a soft MMR reset toward the middle and starts you on five placement games. As of October 2026 we are in Set 18, which launched in late August 2026, and the next set is expected around December 2026.
