Rocket League is a free-to-play car soccer game by Psyonix, owned by Epic Games. Teams of one to four players drive rocket-powered cars to hit a giant ball into the other goal. You win by scoring more goals in about five minutes; a tie goes to sudden-death overtime. As of October 2026 it is in Season 24.

What is Rocket League?

Rocket League is soccer played with rocket-powered cars. Two teams drive around an enclosed arena, jump, boost and fly to knock an oversized ball into the other team's goal. It is made by Psyonix, which Epic Games bought in 2019. The idea is simple to understand in seconds, but the car control, aerials and teamwork take years to master.

The game launched in July 2015 and became free to play on all platforms in September 2020, when the PC version moved to the Epic Games Store. It is updated in seasons of roughly three months. As of October 2026 it is in Season 24, which began on September 23, 2026 with a street-themed Rocket Pass, the new Honor Duel feature and new limited-time events.

What is the objective of Rocket League?

Inside a match the aim is easy to state: score more goals than the other team before the clock runs out. Every car can drive, jump, flip and use boost, which you collect from pads around the arena. There are no character classes or upgrades that change stats; every car body plays by the same physics, so skill decides the result.

Over the longer term, most players chase a higher competitive rank in their favourite playlist and the season rewards that come with wins. Others play for the Rocket Pass, limited-time events, tournaments or simply to master a new mechanic.

How do you win a match in Rocket League?

The team with more goals when the clock reaches zero wins. A standard match lasts about five minutes. If the score is tied at the end, the game goes to sudden-death overtime and the next goal wins. The main ways to play are below.

Mode Team size How you win
Duel (ranked or casual) 1v1 Score more goals than your opponent before time runs out
Doubles (ranked or casual) 2v2 Outscore the other pair; tied games go to sudden-death overtime
Standard (ranked or casual) 3v3 Outscore the other team; the main competitive format
Hoops Team-based Score the most baskets
Rumble Team-based Score the most goals while using random power-ups
Dropshot Team-based Break through the floor tiles on the enemy half and drop the ball through
Snow Day Team-based Score the most goals with a hockey-style puck

Extra modes such as Hoops, Rumble, Dropshot and Snow Day are also available in ranked through the Extra Modes playlists, each with its own rank. Our Rocket League ranks guide lists every competitive playlist.

How does ranked work?

Each competitive playlist has its own rank, from Bronze up through Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Champion and Grand Champion to Supersonic Legend. You start with placement matches, and then your rank moves with every win and loss. Season rewards are earned by winning games at your rank or higher, so playing well across the whole season matters. Season 24 also added exclusive titles for players who finish in the top 100 of the 1v1, 2v2 or 3v3 leaderboards. For every rank, division and reward rule, read the ranks explained guide, and find more articles in the Rocket League guides hub.

Beginner tips to win more

  1. Rotate instead of chasing. After you hit the ball, drive back toward your goal so a teammate can take the next touch.
  2. Grab small boost pads. They refill boost often without leaving your position.
  3. Do not all go for the ball. Two cars hitting the same ball usually leaves your goal open.
  4. Practise in free play and training packs. Ten minutes a day on shots and saves adds up fast.
  5. Learn to flip and recover. Landing on your wheels quickly keeps you in the play.
  6. Turn on ball cam. Keeping the ball on screen makes reading the play much easier.
  7. Focus on one or two playlists. Splitting time across many ranks slows every climb.

Rocket League FAQ

Is Rocket League free to play?

Yes. Rocket League has been free to play on every platform since September 23, 2020. You can play every mode, including ranked, without paying. Money only goes on optional extras such as the premium Rocket Pass and cosmetic items in the shop. On PC the game is downloaded through the Epic Games Store, while existing Steam owners kept access.

How long is a Rocket League match?

A standard match lasts five minutes of game time. If the score is level when the clock runs out, the match goes to sudden-death overtime, where the next goal wins with no time limit. Including kickoffs and replays after goals, most games take a little longer than five minutes in real time.

What is the best mode for beginners?

Casual 2v2 or 3v3 is the best place to start. Teammates cover some of your mistakes, and casual games do not affect your rank. Practise kickoffs, shooting and saving in free play between matches. Once you can hit the ball consistently, play your placement matches in Doubles or Standard and start ranking up.

How does ranked work in Rocket League?

Each competitive playlist, such as 1v1, 2v2 and 3v3, keeps its own rank. You play placement matches first, then your rank goes up or down with each result. Ranks run from Bronze to Grand Champion, with Supersonic Legend at the very top. Season rewards depend on how many wins you get at your rank.

What is new in Rocket League Season 24?

Season 24 began on September 23, 2026 with a street-themed Rocket Pass that includes new car bodies. It added Honor Duel, which lets you challenge a player from your match to a 1v1 straight after the game, along with a custom scoreboard, a free look camera and updated keyboard and mouse controls for new players.

Do you need a controller to play Rocket League?

No, but most players use one. Keyboard and mouse works, and Season 24 updated the default keyboard and mouse bindings to make them friendlier for new players. A controller makes analogue steering and air control easier for many people. Pick whichever feels comfortable and stick with it, since muscle memory matters a lot.
