War Thunder battle rating, or BR, is the number that decides who you fight. Each vehicle has a BR per game mode, your lineup is matched by its highest BR, and matches can pull in enemies up to one BR above or below. Build lineups with close BRs and play in squads to win more.
What is battle rating in War Thunder?
Battle rating is a number on every vehicle that reflects how strong it is. Gaijin adjusts BRs over time based on how vehicles perform, so a tank that dominates may move up and one that struggles may move down. It is separate from a vehicle's rank in the tech tree: rank decides research order, while BR decides matchmaking. A vehicle can also have different BRs in Arcade, Realistic and Simulator, because the modes play differently. This guide reflects the game as of October 2026.
How does matchmaking use BR?
The matchmaker looks at the highest BR in the lineup you bring and puts you in a match with vehicles within one BR of it. If you are at the top of that range, it is called a downtier; at the bottom, an uptier. Both happen to everyone, and a lineup that copes with uptiers wins more over time.
| Situation | What it means | How to play it |
|---|---|---|
| Downtier | You face lower-BR vehicles | Push and take objectives |
| Even match | Everyone is close in BR | Play your normal game |
| Uptier | You face higher-BR vehicles | Play defensively, use cover and support teammates |
How should you build a lineup?
- Keep vehicles close in BR so you never bring a weak spare into a hard match.
- Mix roles: a fast vehicle to capture, a strong one to hold, and an anti-air option in ground battles.
- Put your best-researched vehicles at the top, since they decide the matchmaking.
- Add vehicles you are researching toward, so every battle earns progress.
Do squads change your results?
Yes. Squads of up to four players can coordinate captures, cover each other and share targets. In ground battles a squad that moves together wins fights a lone player would lose. Squads must bring lineups at similar BRs, so agree a BR before you queue. Learning from stronger squadmates is also one of the quickest ways to improve.
How can you win more at your BR?
- Learn the maps at your BR. The same maps come up often.
- Angle your armour. In tanks, angling turns hits into bounces.
- Fight on your terms. In aircraft, use altitude and energy rather than turning with everything.
- Review a loss. Replays show what killed you and why.
Winning more also speeds up research; see our War Thunder research guide.
One more habit worth building: pick a single BR bracket and nation and stay there until you are comfortable. Jumping between brackets means relearning which vehicles you can beat and which to avoid. Players who settle into one bracket learn the common threats, the best positions on each map and which shots pen which armour, and their win rate usually climbs within a couple of weeks.

War Thunder FAQ
What does BR mean in War Thunder?
BR stands for battle rating, a number on each vehicle that reflects its strength. Matchmaking uses the highest BR in your lineup to decide which vehicles you face. A vehicle can have different BRs in Arcade, Realistic and Simulator modes.
What is an uptier in War Thunder?
An uptier is a match where you are at the bottom of the BR range, facing vehicles up to one BR higher. A downtier is the opposite. Both happen to every player, so lineups and tactics that handle uptiers win more over time.
Is BR the same as rank?
No. Rank is a vehicle's place in the tech tree and decides research order, from Rank I to Rank VIII. Battle rating decides matchmaking. Vehicles at the same rank can have quite different BRs.
How many players can be in a War Thunder squad?
Squads can have up to four players. Squad members should bring lineups at similar battle ratings. Playing in a squad helps you coordinate captures and fights, which usually means more wins and more research points.
Can someone play my War Thunder account for me?
Gaijin's terms say each account is personal and may not be shared or used by anyone else. That is why we recommend squad sessions and coaching, where you play on your own account. We never sell Silver Lions, Golden Eagles, vehicles or accounts.
