Spiral Abyss is Genshin Impact's recurring combat challenge. The rotating floors 9 to 12 each have three chambers with two halves, and you clear them with two separate teams for up to 36 stars, earned by finishing quickly. It resets in the middle of each month, and full clears pay Primogems.
How does Spiral Abyss work?
Spiral Abyss has fixed early floors and rotating later floors. The rotating floors 9 to 12 change each reset with new enemies and buffs called Ley Line Disorders. Each chamber has two halves, and you bring a different four-character team to each half, so you need eight strong characters. This is as of October 2026, version 7.1.
How do you earn all 36 stars?
Each chamber awards up to three stars based on how much time is left when you finish. With four floors of three chambers, that is 36 stars. Faster clears mean more stars, so damage and efficient rotations matter more than survival alone.
| Stars in a chamber | Typical reason |
|---|---|
| 3 | Cleared with plenty of time left |
| 2 | Cleared, but slowly |
| 1 | Cleared at the last moment |
How do you build two teams?
- Read the floor. Check which enemies and elements each half favours.
- Split your best characters. Put your two strongest damage dealers on different teams.
- Give each team support. A healer or shielder and a buffer keep rotations smooth.
- Build for the reset. Upgrade the characters this cycle rewards.
If you are short on built characters, focus on raising two full teams before chasing new ones.
When does Spiral Abyss reset?
Spiral Abyss resets in the middle of each month, while Imaginarium Theater resets on the 1st and Stygian Onslaught runs on its own cycle. Clearing all three every cycle gives a steady flow of Primogems. For what else is new, see our Genshin Impact 7.1 guide.
How is Abyss different from Theater and Stygian?
Spiral Abyss rewards a small number of very strong characters. Imaginarium Theater asks for a wide roster, because it limits which characters you can use in each act. Stygian Onslaught focuses on boss fights at rising difficulty. Many players are strong in one mode and weaker in another, which is normal.
If one mode feels out of reach, focus your resources on the mode that suits your roster and treat the others as a bonus. A roster with two well-built teams usually earns more from Abyss than a roster with many half-built characters earns from Theater.
What are the most common Abyss mistakes?
- Taking too long on adds and running out of time for stars.
- Using the same core characters in both teams, which is not allowed.
- Skipping artifact upgrades on the characters doing the damage.
- Ignoring the floor's buffs, which often favour certain elements.
Fixing these usually adds stars faster than pulling for a new character. Coaching can help you spot which of these is costing you the most.
Recording a run and watching it back is one of the simplest ways to spot wasted seconds, such as slow swaps or chasing scattered enemies.

Genshin FAQ
How many stars are in Spiral Abyss?
The rotating floors 9 to 12 have three chambers each, and each chamber gives up to three stars, for 36 in total. Stars depend on how much time is left when you clear, so faster clears earn more.
When does Spiral Abyss reset?
Spiral Abyss resets in the middle of each month. Imaginarium Theater resets on the 1st, and Stygian Onslaught runs on its own cycle, so there is usually at least one mode fresh to clear.
How many characters do I need for Spiral Abyss?
You need two separate teams of four for each chamber, so eight built characters. The same character cannot be on both teams, which is why spreading your strongest characters across two teams matters.
Why do I keep running out of time?
Usually because damage is too low or rotations are slow. Upgrade artifacts and weapons on your main damage dealers, match elements to the floor's enemies and buffs, and practise a clean rotation. A coach can review your runs and point out where time is lost.
Can someone clear Spiral Abyss for me?
A clear can be done on your account with your roster, which means sharing access. HoYoverse's terms do not allow account sharing, so it carries risk. Coaching needs no login. We never sell Primogems, accounts or wishes, and never promise stars for weak rosters.
