Fortnite is a free-to-play battle royale from Epic Games, now in Chapter 7 Season 4: Override. Up to 100 players drop onto an island, collect weapons and gear, and fight while a storm shrinks the safe area. You win a Victory Royale by being the last player or team left alive.

What is Fortnite?

Fortnite is Epic Games' free-to-play online game, and its best-known part is Battle Royale: a match where up to 100 players drop onto an island, gather weapons and materials, and fight until one player or team is left. The classic version lets you build walls, ramps and floors on the fly, while Zero Build removes building entirely and gives you a regenerating overshield instead.

Battle Royale first came out on September 26, 2017, and it now runs on almost every modern platform. The island, weapons and battle pass change every season. As of October 2026 the current season is Chapter 7 Season 4, called Override, which began on August 20, 2026.

What is the objective of Fortnite?

The objective of a Battle Royale match is to be the last player or team standing. Everyone starts with nothing, jumps from the Battle Bus, lands somewhere on the island and starts collecting weapons, healing items and, in build modes, materials. A storm then closes in over the match. Anyone outside the safe area takes damage, which pushes survivors into a smaller and smaller space until one team remains and earns the Victory Royale.

Over a whole season the wider goals are levelling up, completing quests, unlocking battle pass rewards and, for competitive players, climbing the ranked ladder. Fortnite also hosts plenty of non-battle-royale experiences, but this guide focuses on Battle Royale, Zero Build and Reload because those are the modes with ranked play.

How do you win a match in Fortnite?

The win condition is the same idea across the main modes: outlast everyone else. What changes is the team size, the lobby size and whether you can build or respawn.

Mode Team size How you win
Battle Royale Solo, Duos, Trios or Squads (4), up to 100 players Be the last player or team alive as the storm closes; you can build
Zero Build Solo, Duos, Trios or Squads Be the last player or team alive; no building, but a regenerating overshield
Reload Solo up to teams of 4, 40-player matches Be the last team standing on a smaller island; you respawn automatically until the final stage
Ranked (BR, Zero Build, Reload) As the mode The match winner is still the last team alive, but your rank moves with placement and eliminations

Eliminations help, yet survival is what wins. A careful player who rotates early and picks fights wisely often outlasts players with more eliminations who took risky fights.

How does ranked or progression work?

Ranked runs Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond, each with divisions I to III, then Elite, Champion and Unreal. Battle Royale, Zero Build and Reload each have their own rank. Once you reach Elite you cannot drop below it for the rest of that season, and ranks partially reset when a new season starts.

New accounts unlock ranked by finishing the "Outlast 500 players" quest in the Kickstart quests, then switching Ranked on in the mode select screen. Outside ranked, progression comes from your account level, quests and the battle pass.

Our Fortnite ranked explained guide covers every rank, Unreal and how resets work. Every Fortnite post we publish sits in the Fortnite guides hub.

Beginner tips to win more

  • Start with Zero Build if building feels overwhelming. You can learn rotations, aim and the map first, then try build modes later.
  • Land somewhere quieter. Busy landing spots knock out many new players in the first minute. Loot up, then fight.
  • Watch the storm timer. Moving early toward the next safe zone keeps you out of the storm and away from players waiting at its edge.
  • Carry healing. Keep at least one slot for healing or shield items. Winning a fight means little if you cannot recover before the next one.
  • Take fights you can finish. Long fights draw other players in. If you cannot win quickly, reposition.
  • Use cover and high ground. In Zero Build, natural cover replaces walls; in build modes, quick walls and ramps save you.
  • Try Reload to practise fights. Automatic respawns until the final stage mean more fighting time and less waiting.
  • Check your post-match summary. It shows how your placement and eliminations added up, so you can see what helped.

Fortnite FAQ

Is Fortnite free to play?

Yes. Fortnite is free to download and play. Epic earns money from V-Bucks, which buy cosmetic items and the seasonal battle pass, and from the optional Fortnite Crew subscription. Cosmetics change how you look, not how strong you are, so a new player with no purchases can win a match on equal terms with everyone else.

What is the difference between Battle Royale and Zero Build?

Battle Royale lets you gather materials and build walls, ramps and floors during fights. Zero Build removes building completely and gives you a regenerating overshield on top of your health. The goal is the same in both, being the last player or team alive, but Zero Build fights rely more on natural cover, positioning and aim.

What is Fortnite Reload?

Reload is a faster mode with smaller islands and 40-player matches. You respawn automatically after being eliminated until the final stage of the match, and there is no building. It uses a limited weapon pool and supports teams from solo up to four. Reload has its own ranked ladder, separate from Battle Royale and Zero Build.

How many players are in a Fortnite match?

A standard Battle Royale or Zero Build match holds up to 100 players, playing solo or in duos, trios or squads of four. Reload matches are smaller, with 40 players. Some limited-time modes use different numbers, so the lobby size you see can change depending on which playlist you choose.

How do I unlock ranked in Fortnite?

New accounts must complete the Outlast 500 players quest, found in the Kickstart quests. Once it is done, switch Ranked on from the mode selection screen in the lobby. Battle Royale, Zero Build and Reload each have their own rank, so climbing in one mode does not change your rank in the others.

What is a Victory Royale?

A Victory Royale is Fortnite's name for winning a match. You earn one when you, or your team, are the last ones alive after everyone else has been eliminated or caught by the storm. It is the main goal of every Battle Royale, Zero Build and Reload match, and it counts toward your stats and many quests.
