What is the objective in Nightreign?
Each expedition lasts three in-game days. On days one and two you explore Limveld, the main map, with your team. You kill bosses, loot weapons, level up at sites of grace and grab upgrades before the Night's Tide, a circle of storm fire, closes in and forces you together.
Each of the first two days ends with a boss fight inside the shrinking circle. On day three you face the expedition's Nightlord, the main boss of that run. Beat it and the expedition is a win. Fall as a team and the run ends, though you still keep some rewards for the next attempt.
Everything you gather during a run, from levels to weapons, is lost when it ends. What carries over are relics, Murk and unlocks, covered further down.
How do you win in Nightreign?
Winning means beating the Nightlord at the end of an expedition. Different modes raise the challenge in different ways.
| Mode | Players | What a win looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Standard expeditions | Solo, duo or trio | Beat the chosen Nightlord on day three |
| Heolstor | Solo, duo or trio | Beat the final boss after all seven base Nightlords are down |
| Everdark Sovereigns | Solo, duo or trio | Beat harder versions of the seven Nightlords for Sovereign Sigils |
| Forsaken Hollows bosses | DLC owners | Beat the Balancers and the Dreglord |
| Deep of Night | Ranked hard mode | Win runs to raise your rating from Depth 1 to Depth 5 |
The game is built for three players, and most bosses are tuned around a full team. A good trio splits the map early, meets up before the storm closes and revives fallen teammates fast.
How does progression work between runs?
Your level resets every expedition, so long-term progress comes from what you take home. Relics are the main tool. You equip them on your Nightfarer in the Roundtable Hold, the hub between runs, and they add passive bonuses such as stronger skills or better starting items. Murk is the currency you spend at the hub.
Each Nightfarer also has a Remembrance, a personal questline that tells their story and unlocks rewards. Deep of Night, added on September 11, 2025, is a ranked mode with its own rating. Depth 2 starts at 1,000 rating and Depth 5 at 6,000. Wins add points and losses cost more the deeper you go. Our Nightreign Deep of Night guide explains it in full.
What are the best beginner tips for Nightreign?
- Start with a forgiving Nightfarer such as the Wylder, then try others once you know the map.
- Follow the team on day one. Splitting up early is how new players get lost and die alone.
- Watch the storm timer and head inside the circle before it closes.
- Grab weapons that suit your Nightfarer, but do not spend half a day sorting loot.
- Equip relics after every run. Small bonuses add up fast.
- Learn one Nightlord at a time. Each has patterns you can only learn by fighting it.

Nightreign FAQ
What is Elden Ring Nightreign?
Elden Ring Nightreign is a co-op action roguelite from FromSoftware, published by Bandai Namco, that came out on May 30, 2025. You play three-day expeditions as one of several Nightfarers, growing stronger before facing a Nightlord. It is a standalone game, so you do not need the original Elden Ring to play.
Can you play Nightreign solo?
Yes. You can play expeditions solo, as a duo or as a trio. The game is designed around three players, so solo runs are harder and many bosses take longer. Most new players find a full team of three the easiest way to learn the Nightlords. Duo and trio runs can be matched with strangers or played with friends using a password.
How long is a Nightreign run?
A full expedition lasts about 40 minutes. You spend two in-game days exploring, leveling and fighting bosses, then face the Nightlord on day three. A failed run can end sooner if your whole team falls during a boss fight. Short runs make it easy to fit a few attempts into one evening, and each failure still teaches you a boss pattern for the next try.
Do you need the DLC for Nightreign?
No. The base game has seven Nightlords plus the final boss Heolstor, and it is complete without extra purchases. The Forsaken Hollows DLC, released December 4, 2025, adds the Balancers and the Dreglord, the Great Hollow map and two Nightfarers. You need it only for that content. Deep of Night does not require it.
What carries over between Nightreign runs?
Your level and weapons reset after every expedition. What carries over are relics, which you equip at the Roundtable Hold for passive bonuses, Murk for spending at the hub, Remembrance progress and unlocked Nightfarers. Deep of Night rating also carries over. Relic rolls are random. That is why most long-term progress is about collecting better relics.
Is Nightreign good for new players in 2026?
Yes, if you enjoy hard boss fights. Runs are short, so you can learn in small sessions. The difficulty is high, and the first Nightlords can take many attempts. Playing with a team, or with coaching on routing and builds, makes the curve gentler. Many players learn best by watching a teammate handle a boss first.
