Dota 2 is a free-to-play team strategy game (a MOBA) made by Valve and played through Steam. Two teams of five, the Radiant and the Dire, each pick a hero, farm gold and fight across three lanes. You win by destroying the enemy team's Ancient, the large structure inside their base.
What is Dota 2?
Dota 2 is a multiplayer online battle arena from Valve, which both develops and publishes it. It came out on Windows on July 9, 2013, with macOS and Linux versions arriving the same month, and you download and launch it through Steam. The game is fully free: every hero is available from the start, and Valve earns money from cosmetic items and the optional Dota Plus subscription.
The hero pool is large, with more than 120 heroes, each with its own abilities. Valve updates the game with lettered balance patches. The most recent gameplay patch we could confirm is 7.41e, released on July 30, 2026, ahead of The International 2026 in Shanghai. Check the official patch page for anything newer when you read this.

What is the objective of Dota 2?
Across many games, the goal is to learn heroes, improve your decisions and, for many players, raise your ranked medal. In a single match, the goal is to destroy the enemy Ancient while keeping yours alive.
The map is split diagonally by a river. Each team owns a base in one corner, linked to the enemy base by three lanes guarded by towers. Creep waves spawn and walk down every lane, and the jungle between the lanes holds neutral camps. Killing creeps and heroes earns gold and experience, which you turn into items and levels.
Dota has a few details that surprise newcomers. You can deny your own creeps and low-health towers to cut what the enemy earns from them, Roshan drops the Aegis, which brings its holder back to life once, and dying costs you some of your unreliable gold. Teams usually spread across five positions, from the main carry who farms for late game to the hard support who protects others and places wards.
How do you win a match in Dota 2?
In every standard mode, the first team to destroy the opposing Ancient wins. Towers, barracks and Roshan, a powerful neutral boss, are the steps that open the way. Here are the main ways to play as of October 2026.
| Mode | Team size | How you win |
|---|---|---|
| All Pick (unranked) | 5 vs 5 | Destroy the enemy Ancient |
| Ranked All Pick | 5 vs 5, solo or party | Destroy the enemy Ancient; a win raises your MMR |
| Turbo | 5 vs 5 | Destroy the enemy Ancient in a faster game with more gold and weaker towers |
| Captains Mode | 5 vs 5 | Destroy the enemy Ancient after captains run the draft |
| Battle Cup | Teams of 5 in an 8-team bracket | Win every match in a weekend single-elimination bracket |
A team can also concede, which ends the game as a loss for them. Other draft styles such as Single Draft and Ability Draft use the same win condition with different hero selection rules.
How does ranked work in Dota 2?
Ranked shows your skill as a medal: Herald, Guardian, Crusader, Archon, Legend, Ancient and Divine, each with five stars, then Immortal as a leaderboard at the top. A hidden number called MMR moves you between stars. Before you can play ranked, Valve asks for 100 hours of play on the account and a phone number linked to Steam.
Your behavior score matters too. Abandoning games or getting reported often can drop you into low priority, a queue you must win your way out of. Our Dota 2 ranks explained guide covers medals, calibration and MMR in detail, and every Dota article lives on our Dota 2 guides hub.
Beginner tips to win more
- Start with simple heroes. Sturdy heroes with easy spells let you learn the map before you learn complex combos.
- Practice last hitting and denying. Every creep you finish is gold for you, and every one you deny is gold the enemy loses.
- Buy a Town Portal Scroll. Keeping one ready lets you defend towers and join fights across the map.
- Watch the minimap and respect fog. If enemy heroes vanish, assume they are coming for you.
- Play Turbo to learn heroes quickly. Faster games mean more practice per hour, then take the lessons to normal games.
- Take towers after won fights. Structures open the map and feed your team gold.
- Stay positive in chat. Reports affect your behavior score, and a calm team throws fewer games.

Dota 2 FAQ
Is Dota 2 free to play?
Yes. Dota 2 is completely free on Steam, and every hero is unlocked from your first game, so nobody can pay for a stronger hero. Valve makes money from cosmetic items, event bundles and the optional Dota Plus subscription, which adds hero progress tracking and some extra features but gives no in-match power.
What is Turbo mode in Dota 2?
Turbo is a faster version of All Pick. Heroes earn gold and experience more quickly, towers are weaker and respawns are shorter, so games wrap up sooner than a normal match. It does not affect your ranked medal, which makes it a relaxed way to try new heroes, test item builds and get comfortable with the map before you take on longer games.
What is the best Dota 2 mode for beginners?
Begin with the in-game tutorials and a few bot matches to learn controls and items. After that, unranked All Pick teaches the real game, while Turbo is a relaxed way to try many heroes quickly. Leave ranked until you know a handful of heroes well, because ranked results shape your medal and your teammates for a long time.
How do I unlock ranked in Dota 2?
You need 100 hours of play on the account and a phone number linked to your Steam account before Ranked opens. Your first ranked games then calibrate your starting medal. If you leave games or collect many reports, you can land in low priority, which you must clear by winning games before normal queues open again.
How do you win in Dota 2?
You win by destroying the enemy Ancient, which sits deep in their base behind towers and barracks. Teams get there by farming gold, winning fights, taking towers and often killing Roshan for the Aegis, which lets one hero come back after dying. A team can also concede early, which counts as a win for the other side.
Can a Dota 2 boost get my account banned?
It can. Steam's agreement does not allow account sharing, and Valve can act against accounts that break its rules. A piloted order, where someone logs in for you, carries the most risk. Playing with a booster in your party carries less, and coaching carries none. Our account safety page explains each option before you buy.
