To become a Pirate Legend in Sea of Thieves, reach level 50 in three trading companies, claim each level 50 promotion, then speak to the Mysterious Stranger. He grants the title, the Legendary clothing set and the Shanty of Legends, and opens Athena's Fortune voyages. Emissary flags and full voyages speed it up most.
What do you need to become a Pirate Legend?
You need level 50 in any three trading companies, such as the Gold Hoarders, the Order of Souls, the Merchant Alliance or the Reaper's Bones. At level 50 each company offers a promotion that you claim. Once three are claimed, the Mysterious Stranger in the Tavern of Legends grants Pirate Legend. This is the same as of October 2026, in Season 21.
Which three companies should you level?
| Company | Main activity | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Gold Hoarders | Treasure maps and chests | Relaxed solo or small crews |
| Order of Souls | Skeleton captains and skulls | Combat-focused players |
| Merchant Alliance | Cargo and deliveries | Organised crews |
| Reaper's Bones | Emissaries and PvP-heavy play | Confident crews who like risk |
Pick the three that match how you like to play. Enjoying the voyages keeps you going through the long middle levels.
How do you level reputation faster?
- Raise an emissary flag. Emissary grades multiply the reputation you earn for that company.
- Hand in loot to the right company. Sell each item to the company it belongs to.
- Do world events. Forts and events give big hauls of valuable loot.
- Sail with a full crew. More hands finish voyages faster.
Avoid sinking with a full ship: the most common setback is losing a hold of treasure before you hand it in.
How long does Pirate Legend take?
It varies a lot. A crew that plays efficiently with emissary flags can do it in a few weeks of regular play; a solo player playing casually may take months. If you already have one or two companies at 50, the remaining climb is much shorter.
What does Pirate Legend unlock?
Pirate Legend gives the title, the Legendary clothing set and the Shanty of Legends, and opens Athena's Fortune voyages, which lead to more commendations and cosmetics. Many players then chase curses and Hourglass allegiance. For what is new this season, see our Season 21 guide.
How do you protect your loot from other crews?
Sea of Thieves is a shared world, and other crews can attack you to take your loot. Hand in valuables often, watch the horizon, and avoid parking a full ship at a busy outpost. Sailing with a steady crew makes defending much easier.
If PvP stresses you out, choose companies and voyages that keep you away from busy areas, and remember that losing a haul is part of the game rather than a failure. Steady progress over many sessions gets you to Pirate Legend just as surely as one perfect night.

Sea of Thieves FAQ
How do you become a Pirate Legend in Sea of Thieves?
Reach level 50 in three trading companies, claim the level 50 promotion in each, then speak to the Mysterious Stranger. He grants the Pirate Legend title, the Legendary clothing set and the Shanty of Legends, and opens Athena's Fortune voyages.
Which trading companies count for Pirate Legend?
Any three trading companies at level 50 count, including the Gold Hoarders, the Order of Souls, the Merchant Alliance and the Reaper's Bones. Pick the ones whose voyages you enjoy, because the middle levels take the longest.
What is the fastest way to level reputation?
Fly an emissary flag for the company you are levelling, hand in loot to the right company, take part in world events and forts, and sail with a full crew. Emissary grades multiply reputation, which makes the biggest difference.
How long does it take to become a Pirate Legend?
It depends on your crew and play time. An efficient crew using emissary flags can do it in a few weeks of regular play, while casual solo play can take months. Having one or two companies at 50 already shortens it a lot.
Can someone get Pirate Legend for me?
Some services play on your account, which means signing in to your Microsoft account; the Microsoft Services Agreement says not to share your password. Sailing with an experienced crew on your own account avoids that. We never sell gold, doubloons or Ancient Coins.
